Does Your Soul Feel its Worth?

I am convinced that the lyrics to O Holy Night are some of the best lines ever penned.  My favorite comes right away—“Long lay the world in sin and error pining ‘til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.”  This is the gospel in a nutshell.  Eighteen words that tell us that the world is a mess (duh) and that Jesus’ life and love is what will save us. 

Observe a nativity scene.  Maybe you have a wooden set in your home or you’ve seen one in a store.  Take a look at that tiny wooden baby.  Hold it in your hand.  That carved item represents a very real baby whose beating heart entered our world for you. 

He saw us drowning in all our sin and sickness.

He saw us barely breathing with anxiety pressing in.

He saw us staring agape at all the allegations in the headlines (and our own hearts).

He saw us loosing every battle with addiction.

He saw us gray-faced in our family dysfunction.

He saw us weeping silent tears on our pillow for dreams that would never come true.

He saw us attempting to hide every shortcoming behind cropped photos and forced smiles.

He saw the world trudging along under chains of sin and then He came to our rescue.

His appearance was as a baby for a million reasons having to do with humanity and humility and the fullness of time.  But the bottom line is that His appearance was a gift from God the Father.  His heart was so full of love for your soul that He sent His only son. 

He knows you.

He sees you.

He’s numbered the hairs on your head.

He’s counted all your tears.

He hears you.

He came for you.
