Here’s what I love:
hilarious moments caught on film.
I mean, didn’t you laugh at this photo!? I don’t know what is funnier—the wind blown hair or our
contorted faces.
Do you know what happened?
Well, we were all sitting pretty on this bridge on a bit of a blustery
afternoon. We got several nice
shots of all of us smiling—the breeze ruffled our hair making us look like
models with a wind-blown look.
Until…
Suddenly, a huge gust swept all of the dirt and debris from the
downtown streets straight into our faces.
My eyes and mouth filled with grit before I could even quit
smiling.
The quick shutter clicks captured our reactions. This is where it gets interesting…
Bill, (my selfless knight in shining armor), quickly raised one of his
giant, hands to protect his tiny daughter’s little eyes from the evil
sand.
I on the other hand turned my head and lifted my hand to protect MYSELF.
This picture is classic. It reveals my husband’s character and
my own so well.
Bill is a servant through and through. He cares about others (especially his
family) and he will almost always put others first.
I am less likely to put others before
myself. Now, I’d like to think
that had those been bullets flying at us rather than gutter grit, that my
“tiger-mom” protectiveness would have been unleashed and I would have thrown my
entire body in front of my family to keep them from being hit.
Let’s just say I would have done that. Okay? I believe I would.
However, in cozy, first world, Middle
Tennessee, we are not likely to be shot at (even if we were downtown!)
No, our physical lives aren’t likely to be
threatened.
However, inconveniences and hardships do
arrive…sometimes unexpectedly…and hit us smack-dab in our cheesy smiles. Traffic and throw-up and discord and
financial strain and bad grades and lies and bullying and technology failure
and car accidents and lost wallets and mean people and crowds and job loss and
people’s dumb choices are all examples of bits of this fallen world swirling
around and poking at our faces.
How we react reveals a lot about our
character.
For example, the other evening, we were
trying to watch a show on-line.
You know how finicky computers and the internet can be. The show kept cutting out and getting
interrupted. I was unjustifiably
angry about this. I mean,
ridiculously mad that it wouldn’t work.
As I stomped into my room, God gently said, “Really?”
“Really, this is how you are going to act
about a stupid television show?!”
There are people without food and water out
there somewhere.
There are people in New Jersey without power
because a tree landed on their house.
There are people very near by who are
sleeping on a cold sidewalk.
There are people even nearer who are
struggling with deep emotional pain.
But, I wasn’t thinking about those
people. I was thinking about
myself. I was wanting what I wanted
and I was wanting it now. I was
raising my hands against the minor gust of wind blowing sands of inconvenience
into my eyes instead of reaching over to protect the eyes of someone else.
Thankfully, God has the power to reform
my character. He can reach down
and change my ugly attitude and begin forming my heart to beat more in rhythm
with His.
This is amazing stuff people.
This is God at work in the every day. This is God making me into a vessel that can glorify Him by
serving others. Maybe the next
time an unexpected trial hits, I’ll think less about how it affects me and jump
a little more quickly to help those around me.
Here’s hoping!
