Here's what I love: The Promise Keeper.
Did you know that when you walk through the yellow door of
my new house you are walking into a promise fulfilled? No, it’s not that God revealed to us
that we would have a blue house with a yellow door on this particular street
and there are no verses in the Bible about Craftsman style houses being built
for the Cutrers.
It wasn’t some name-it, claim-it sort of promise.
Instead, it was more of a whispered call to move. You may remember
the "fictional" story of Will and Liz—through a series of events and much prayer, "they" felt the Lord
calling them to move closer to his work and into a particular neighborhood.
We actually didn’t know what type of
house or where the house would be exactly. But, we put our old house on the market and waited for it to
sell so that we could move.
We waited and waited and waited for what seemed like forever
for our old house to sell. But, we
learned many lessons through that process, the most important of which
is trusting God. We knew He
started this process and we knew He would bring it to fruition.
Lyrics from a Passion song really spoke to
us during that dark, uncertain time.
Promise maker, promise keeper
You finish what you begin
Our provision through the desert
You see it through 'til the end
You see it through 'til the end
You finish what you begin
Our provision through the desert
You see it through 'til the end
You see it through 'til the end
And then, it happened.
Our house sold. We found a
new one, then we lost it—(more lessons learned,) then we found another
option with a builder: the opportunity to build a house from the ground
up. What a beautiful, yet daunting
prospect. I have to say that I really
enjoyed the whole process. I
especially love that I saw this house when it was just a cinderblock
foundation. We are intimately
acquainted with every square inch of this house and yet God knows even more
about it. He knew we’d be living
here beginning on January 7th, 2014 and He knows everyone who will
walk through the yellow door.
Every day I look around and feel like I can’t believe this
is our house. Yes, this house is a
gorgeous, meaningful promise fulfilled.
But, in the grand scheme of eternity, this is merely a
shadow of God’s Promise. A
glimpse, a foretaste of what promise-keeping is all about really.
Like when a waiter promises to bring out your food. You may question the length of time it
took or the quality, but you generally feel that he says he will bring your
food, so he will. And he
does. He brings it out and you
aren’t really amazed. That’s what
they do there. You’ve experienced
it time after time.
God does it too.
He keeps lots of little, insignificant-seeming promises to show us what
promise-keeping looks like. Sunrises,
seasons, rainbows, and the ocean’s tide all remind us of God’s steady,
consistent, beautiful faithfulness.
We may grow impatient when it seems like Spring will never
come, but eventually it does come.
And eventually, He will come.
It’s a promise way more fulfilling than a dream house and
far deeper than the longing of our heart.
Right now, I sit within the four walls of this staggeringly
beautiful promise-fulfilled and thank God for His work in our lives. But this house, along with all other
earthly possessions will pass away, but His word will never pass away. Our eternal King is teaching us
about His character every time our eyes flutter open to a new day.
