Good Friday

Here's what I love: Good Friday.

Aren't we supposed to spend Good Friday feeling sad and somber?--Constantly thinking about Jesus on the cross? Considering his torture and death?
Well, I spent Good Friday in cheery Palm Springs, CA. 75 degrees, blue skies, palm trees waving, roses scenting the air with loveliness--it is beyond gorgeous here. I woke up, had a bagel and coffee, took a short run, dyed easter eggs with my family, had a light lunch on the patio and then went for a swim. After a relaxing afternoon, we will eat dinner together at the country club dining room. Sounds like a dream, doesn't it?
Two thousand years ago, Jesus was being betrayed, beaten, spat upon, pierced, mocked, scourged, covered with every sin committed by any one ever and forsaken. It was the darkest day in history.
But, it was not the end.
On the third day, He rose again.
Jesus conquered death forever.
And because I believe in what Jesus did on the cross, I do not have to fear death. At all.
I love the way Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it.
"Death is hell and night and cold, if it is not transformed by our faith. But that is just what is so marvelous, that we can transform death." (Bonhoeffer was executed for his role in trying to stop Hitler during WWII.)
So, this Good Friday, I am so thankful that I can live in light of Easter Sunday. That I can enjoy this sunshine and family time and rejoice instead of mourn--for my own heart is eternally alive.

Happy Easter dear ones. May you sense the Lord's presence in a very real way.
